In James Dashner's Maze runner, the theme of civilizations vs savagery can be seen throughout the novel. A prime example of this can be seen through the Gladers' savage rules they govern themselves by. The way in which Ben is executed and killed by the Gladers' show how savage and brutal the laws the Gladers' laws are. Also the experiment itself is very savage. The boys are left in a deadly maze by themselves with supplies that come in only once a week.the maze is full of horrible monsters and constant trials, the situation can only be called savage.
The situation is very similar to another work of literature, Lord of the flies. In Lord of the Flies the boys are left alone to govern themselves, just as the boys in Maze runner are. The situation is extremely similar. In Lord of the Flies the way the boys govern themselves is also very savage. Originally they have established rules and the society appears to thrive, yet as time progresses the society begins to degrade into savagery. The boys start to kill one another and the laws that Jack begins to govern the boys with are incredibly savage and inhumane. The boys in Lord of the Flies are also in an inherently savage setting. They are shipwrecked on a undiscovered island, with no adults, left to govern themselves.
The boys in both novels can't help but have savage aspects in their society. They have no rules already established, and must make their own, and because of their locations and environments, they can't help but have savage tendencies. While both sets of boys are able to establish small civilizations, they still can't maintain a completely humane and perfect civilization, and both have savage aspects to them. Yet, don't all civilizations have savage aspects to them, are there any civilizations who are truly, one hundred percent in savage? Savagery is a characteristic of humans, as we are still animals. So can one blame the boys for having a savage civilization? Or would any group of people have a savage civilization based on the circumstances? Who can say for sure.
